Campus preparations for predicted serious weather conditions

Dear members of the Vassar community:

Serious weather conditions resulting from Hurricane Sandy, including significant rainfall and heavy winds, are predicted for our area beginning Monday and extending through Tuesday. Weather updates for the storm should be checked through the National Weather Service, as the exact path of the storm and its landfall become clearer over the weekend. Information on storm preparations is available from Dutchess County at http://www.dutchessny.gov/

The college's Crisis Response Planning Group met Friday afternoon to begin preparations for the impact of the storm on campus. Buildings and Grounds Services is securing the campus, with special attention to construction sites and buildings with a history of water infiltration during heavy wind and rain. The offices of the Dean of the College, Dean of the Faculty, and Communications, among others, are prepared to respond as we know more about the full effect of the storm. Should we lose power on campus, classes and events will be cancelled and only designated essential employees should report to work.

The Crisis Response Planning Group will meet again Monday morning unless changing circumstances require us to convene sooner. As we know more specifics of developing conditions, we will use email, text messages, the college homepage, and social media to communicate updates.
